Helping out the class…

We had a meeting with all the class assistants last night, and I was not nervous at all about anything that we would have to do, because I had taught many lessons in high school for my family and consumer science classes. After we left the meeting I started to realize that I was a little more anxious for the class than I thought because English is not my major and I was going to have to help other kids with it. After a while I realized that I was going to have to teach different subjects when I substitute teach anyways. I am really excited to help the students in class because I think that it helped me last semester especially with the autoethnography.

I think that in this class there were somethings that you had trouble with, but you did try to make sure that you could re-do it to be better, even for the couple points in your first paper. I think that as a writer you could have taken things farther and could have been more creative with some of the papers. I can see that you do try to help others because when you graded others papers you wrote all over them, giving them advice or trying to help them out with small things. This is not an easy course load and you slacked some in the blogs, but you always participated in class and tried to give your input or opinions.

We still have to meet up for sushi with Megan!

I honestly don’t think that there was anything else that you could have done for me in this class. I think that if this letter were to some of my other professors, then I would list off a lot of things that could have helped me. You gave us ways to write different papers, if I wasn’t in this class now I would not know what the hell an Autoethnography is. Also I would still be stuck in that five paragraph essay, narrative or research structure that I was in when I entered this class. I think that this class helped me to think more about me than just basic this is how you write a paper. I think that yeah I learned a lot in here about different papers and sure that stuff will help me, but this class gave me the chance to get to know me and at this time in my life that is what i most needed. I think that everything that you have taught us in this class will help all of us in some form or another. I think that everyone should be required to take your class (sorry you would have a lot of papers to grade then, but oh well). Thanks a lot!!!

I realized that when i first wrote about What is I, I tried to give a philospophical answer to it. thinking only about how the professor probably wanted me to write it. I wrote something that i learned about in my philosphy class and not what i really thought the I was. If i had not taken philosphy class i probably would have just written that I is me, an outgoing, talkative person that tries to do her best and gives to others as much as possible. I think that i would have just written about myself and WHO i thought i was at that time. ANd at that time i would have written about a girl that had just left home for the first time to go to college and was scared to be on her own. A girl that left her boyfirend of over 3 years behind to pursue her career. Now if i wrote who I am i think that it would be more along the lines of a woman that went off to college and has some struggles, but is still ready to keep going, and realizes that she still wants to do that same career. A woman that knows that she can make it on her own for sure away from mommy and daddy. A woman that didn’t leave her boyfriend but kept him right beside her during this whole new experience and as a result has become an even better relationship even though their is 15 hours of driving in between them. THough she misses him can still go on with daily life and be happy without feeling bad about it. Writing these papers even though at first glance the papers look completely different

Hearing Workshop 2

From listening to the two songs that i listened to on Shauna’s ipod, i could tell that she is really calm and laid. I could tell because the two songs that she chose were slower and they were more like ballods. She is relatively quiet so it just made sense that she chose those two songs. And actually my boyfriend listens to the music she chose and he is really laid back

I could see that from the first song that Emily has a calm side because the first song was a lot slower and it was more of a ballad song, and I know that my mom listens to One Republic and they seem a little bit more like a laid back band there songs are slower and not really as upbeat. This song just made me see that she has a calmer side because she probably wouldnt listen to that kind of music if she was constantly hyper. From the second song she played i could tell that she liked to have a really good time because once i heard the beginning of the song i could almost picture in my mind her belting the song out while she was with a group of her friends and just dancing a long with the music. I think i actually thought that because it almost seemed like a song that i would do that same thing to, because songs that are upbeat like that make me wanna sing and dance right a long with it. It really showed how much fun she can have and how fun she can be!

Hearing, it is more important than many may think there are many people that can’t hear and maybe that is why we think that it is not so important, because we see that we can actually live without it with more ease than it seems we could if we couldnt see or talk. We just think of it as a sense that is not as important, when really it is. If we lost our hearing we wouldnt be able to hear the sounds of our loved one, families, friends none of those voices would be hear again, and even if there was a hearing aid to help hear a little bit, those voices wouldnt sound the same as they did before. We wouldnt be able to listen to music of any kind we would have to watch tv and READ which means that we might as well be reading a book, which would probably be easier because we can flip back if we missed something, but on tv (unless you have DVR) then we can’t rewind the news. We can’t read it at our own pace so we may miss major junks of the tv show you love or of a news event that is going on in the world we would miss all of that. We would also miss the fact that we cant hear emergency things

My writing goals for this writing assignment are to write an informative essay about hearing and how it affects our lives. This blog will be the first part to my essay so it is the body three paragraphs so far. How it can affect our development, our communication, and hearing things for enjoyment and necessity. My audience for this essay would be for my Great Grandma, because she is deaf in one ear, and I want her to see what could happen if she lost her hearing completely, because she constantly says, “I don’t need to hear anything anymore, I’m an old lady I don’t need to listen to what other’s tell me what to do.” I want her to see that it is more important than she thinks it is to be able to hear, and that she should appreciate that she can still hear in one ear.

Losing hearing, means that things have to be relearned or learned differently in order for a person to live a normal day to day life. A person that is born deaf has many developmental issues, whereas a person that was raised normal and lost their hearing later in life would not have such problems or not to such a severe degree. People that are born deaf have many vocabulary problems. Children have a hard time to learning abstract words such as bank, because they can’t tell if the word bank in a sentence is referring to a place where money is stored or where the land ends and water begins below it. Whereas, a person that later in life becomes deaf, can still differentiate between the two in a sentence.

Communicating is completely different when a person is born deaf they learn to communciate by sign language almost right away, so they have never had any other form of communication with others. In a person that becomes deaf after already learning to communicate by talking and listening more problems occur. They have to suddenly learn that they have to have someone sign to talk to them or they need to learn to read lips. Also in both cases the person has a lot of problems knowing how loud they talk, so they often talk louder than they think they are, almost as if they are yelling. These things have to take a lot of practice and effort on the part of the person with the hearing problem.

Listening to music, something that is normally easy for people, yet people that are deaf cannot listen to music like everyone else can. They not only miss out on hearing songs that they may enjoy, but they miss out on hearing simple things that everyone else takes for granted. They can’t hear the wind blowing in the trees, rain hitting the ceiling, or little kids laughing while they play. Though people that are born deaf they never heard those sounds to take for granted in the first place, but people that become deaf have problems adjusting to not hearing their wife or husband’s voice, and realize they took many little things for granted. Though they can’t hear things that they enjoy, more importantly they can’t hear things that can be life threating. A small fire starts on a stove and the fire detector goes off, but the person continues to read, because they can’t hear the alarm. These types of noises that are missed can be life threating. Getting read to cross the road and a horn blows, but the person doesn’t hesistate to cross and continues not noticing the two cars that just sworved to miss them.

I believe that I reached my goals so far. I was trying to get a start on my paper with this blog, and i believe that this will help me a lot with writing my paper, i just have to pull more facts and add the introduction and the conclusion.

Losing the sense to hear not only means that communicating with others more difficult, but it also removes the ability to listen to music for enjoyment, and can effect how a person develops.

“We open our mouths, force air from our lungs into our larynx, our voice box, and through an openning between our vocal cords, which vibrate. And then we speak.” Ackerman pg. 182

“As we age and the eardrum thickens, high-frequency sounds don’t pass as easily along and between the bones to the inner ear, and we start to lose both ends of the range, especially the high notes, as we may discover when we listen to our favorite music.” Ackerman pg. 189

Theisis: Losing the sense to hear not only means that communicating with others more difficult, but it also removes the ability to listen to music for enjoyment or everyday sounds, and can effect how a person develops.

I. If a person is born deaf they learn to communicate through sign language, but if they are born with their hearing, but lose their hearing later in life they will need to learn how to communicate all over again.
